Across Lakewood, families who have lived here for years are being priced out of the neighborhoods they call home. At the same time, churches across Colorado are holding land they no longer fully use, sitting with an older question. Who is my neighbor?
For a church, that is not abstract. The family two blocks over who can no longer afford to stay is the neighbor. And being a neighbor means helping them remain in the community they love.
Mountair West Benton Townhomes is one answer. On land once held by Mountair Church, we are building 13 permanently affordable townhomes so working families can put down roots, build equity, and enjoy the people and places they’ve grown to love.

What We're Building
Thirteen townhomes in the heart of Lakewood, built for households earning 70 to 100% of Area Median Income.
These are real family homes. Three- and four-bedroom, roughly 1,500 to 2,000 square feet. Room to grow.
The land is held in a faith-based land trust, which keeps the homes affordable in perpetuity. Not just for the first family that buys, but for every family who comes after. For those families, this is the chance to own instead of rent, to build wealth instead of watching it leave with the rent check, and to stay in a community they helped build.

More Than Housing
This project is built on a simple belief. A home is where relationships take root. Affordable housing should do more than give people a place to live. It should help neighbors know one another and build something together.
That comes straight from Abundant Ground's Who Is My Neighbor? work, which invites churches to go further than donating land. Your neighbor is the person right in front of you. The one already here, and the one moving in. Being a neighbor is not a feeling. It is something you build.
Because in the end this is not about 13 units. It is about the people who will live in them.

Mountair West Benton is the first demonstration of the SALT model, short for Shared Abundance Land Trust. SALT is a way for churches to steward their land for lasting community good while staying rooted in the neighborhoods they serve. Holding the land in trust is what makes the homes affordable for good, and what makes the whole thing repeatable.
It started with a question congregations keep asking. How do we use our land for the long-term good of our community without losing who we are?
This model is one answer, worked out in real homes on real land. When it succeeds, it becomes a blueprint. A repeatable model that congregations across Colorado and beyond can adapt to turn underused land into permanently affordable homes.
Every church has neighbors. Every church can answer this.
One church. One block. Then the next.
Where things stand
This is real, and it is moving.
The property is under contract, and we are working toward closing. Right now we are in predevelopment. The land is being replatted; we have received preliminary approval on a grant with DOLA-DOH, and we’re awaiting a decision on more grant funding from CHFA. A lot of the key pieces are already in place.
